Introduction of Solid foods.

Usually we do not recommend the introduction of solids until 6 months due to  concerns of food allergy.

The first food is usually cereal. Most commonly Rice cereal 2 tablespoons twice a day.

Some families wish to start sooner but not prior to 4 months of age.

In that case we start vegetable at 5 months 1 small jar twice a day.

And fruits at 6 months, also 1 small jar twice a day.

Usually by 6 months your infant is taking 4-5 bottles and 3 meals a day.

Early introduction of solids usually does not cause your infant to sleep better and may be the cause of some infants being overweight.

Generally yellow vegetable are tolerated better than green but no corn is given during the first year.

Bananas and applesauce are the fruits most commonly started first but they both can cause constipation.

Meats and dinners are not started until 8-10 months

Finger foods and crackers somewhere between 10 and 14 months.

Each child is different as to their motor skill and development and may be ready for some textures at different times.

No vitamins are needed with formula feed infants.

Breast fed infants will need vitamins and iron at about 6 months.

The need for fluoride is uncertain since it is in some foods and juices.

But I will supplement my breast fed infants during the second 6 months.

All mothers should continue their prenatal vitamins during the time that they are nursing.

Table food is usually begun during the second 6 months with foods that can easily be mashed with a fork.

Most infants will prefer to feed themselves by 8-10 months.

You have effectively lost control, but that is ok.

Foods to avoid are citrus such as lemonade or orange juice as well as tomato.

Any nuts as well as peanut butter.

Also melons such as canelope and honeydew are common sources of allergy.

Many children are also sensitive to berries and many of the dyes found in some fruits and juices.

Always prepare your infants food away from where you handle raw uncooked meat, fish and eggs due to bacterial contamination.
